Essentials to always keep in your car


For repair and maintenance:


In the case of breaking down at the side of the road, you’ll need to keep the following things in your car to be prepared.

  • Jumper cables: To avoid being a sitting duck, Familiarise yourself with your engine and make sure that you know how to jumpstart your car. As an alternative, you can pack an emergency battery booster to make things a lot easier.

  • Spare tyre: (This is including your tyre jack and tyre iron, because the spare tyre itself would be pretty useless without them). Make sure you know how to change your tyres and if at all your tyres need a special key, make sure that is always kept in your vehicle as well.

  • Tyre inflator and sealer: If your tyre is not too badly damaged this could help you get to the auto shop.

  • Your car’s manual: Kept in the glove compartment.

  • Duct tape: This could be very useful in unexpected situations. Keeping things from falling apart long enough to get to your next destination and until you get it properly fixed.

  • Car insurance claim forms and any other needed car repair information




For safety:


It’s wise to set up an emergency bag or kit, especially if you are someone who spends a lot of time on the road.


Your kit should include:

  • First aid kit.

  • Multi tool.

  • Flashlight.

  • Water bottles and energy bars.

  • Matches or another way to start a fire.

  • A spare charger for your electronic devices.




Here are a few other car specific items:

  • Maps, the paper kind (In case your electronics fail you).

  • Reflective triangle (or flares if you need to signal for help)

  • Seatbelt cutter in your glove compartment.

  • Window breaker, also in the glove compartment.

  • Blankets.

  • Cardboard (Can be used to put under your tyres for traction when you for example, get stuck in mud).



These are cheap and easy to travel with items that could make a big difference when it comes to emergency situations.
